Chapter Fourteen
âThanks for the chat,â Elliot told his brother, feeling an uncharacteristic wave of affection. âI appreciate it.â
âAnytime, bro. Give yourself time to process everything youâve been through. Youâve had a breakup too, rememberâeven if you were the one who instigated it, it takes time to recover.â
Elliot nodded, thinking about it as they packed up their gear, then drove back to Kerikeri. He was glad he wasnât with Karen anymore, but Dominic was right; he still missed her, and it was taking time to get used to the fact that they werenât together. Heâd do his best to be patient, even though it wasnât one of his better qualities.
His phone vibrated in his pocket, and he drew it out and checked the text. It was from Libby. Are you around? Iâm outside your house (again.)
He smiled, feeling a swell of pleasure, and texted back, Nearly there, just been fishing with Dom. Can you wait five minutes?
Sure, she said.
âLibbyâs waiting for me,â he told his brother, who was driving. âDonât say anything.â
Dominic just rolled his eyes and turned off into his road. âSo much for the lecture.â
âHey, I listened. I canât help it if the girl canât keep away.â
The two brothers chuckled, and Dominic pulled in behind Libbyâs car. âThere you go,â he told Elliot. âDonât do anything I wouldnât do.â
Elliot gave him a wry look, got out and retrieved his rod from the roof and his bag, and waved goodbye.
Libby got out as he approached, and he smiled at her. âHey you.â
âHey.â She was wearing a white top over her dark blue jeans, and her cheeks were flushed, her eyes bright.
âAre you okay?â He paused outside the door. He hadnât seen her much since sheâd left after Karenâs visit a few weeks ago. Heâd tried to give her some space, although heâd texted her daily. Roberta had told him Libby hadnât been feeling the ticket, and he was worried that her leg was hurting.
She nodded and followed him into the house. He dumped his gear on the floor and went through to the kitchen. âLet me wash my hands; Iâm all fishy.â
Usually sheâd have made a joke, but she remained quiet, and he ran his hands under the tap, glancing at her where she wandered over to the window, looking out at the tui bird chirping merrily in the tree outside.
âIs everything all right?â he asked, wiping his hands on a towel.
She turned then. âYesâ¦â
He tossed the towel aside and leaned a hip on the worktop. âButâ¦â
She shoved her hands in the pockets of her jeans and looked at the floor. âI wasnât going to tell youâ¦â
He smiled, thinking how beautiful she looked, almost glowing in the ray of sunshine falling across the floor. âYou can tell me anything, sweetheart. What is it?â
She raised her gaze to him then. âIâm pregnant.â
There was a long, long silence.
Elliotâs brain was spinning faster than a centrifuge, scattering his thoughts all over the place. With those simple words sheâd just complicated everything a hundredfold. He blinked, searching his brain for something to say, and couldnât locate the words.
